Eid-ul Fitr 2020: History, significance and importance

The "Festival of Breaking the Fast" or we call Eid-ul-Fitr, is a sacred holiday celebrated by Muslims all over the world with full joy and celebration. The festival indicates the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting (Roza) of Ramadan.

Eid ul-Fitr is celebrated during the whole month, which is very long fasting during the holy period of Ramadan or Ramzan when the Muslim community practice daily Roza (fasting in Islam). The routine is performed by observing a sehri or suhoor before sunrise, and iftar after Maghrib post-sunset. This observance is followed for a period of up to 30 days as Eid,  which depends on the moon sighting which suppose to appear on the 29th or 30th day of Ramzan.
It is believed that Prophet Muhammad got the first revelation of the Holy Quran in this month.

the date is no fixed for every year it is estimated as per the moon sighting. The beginning date of any lunar Hijri month changes according to the sighting of the new moon by religious authorities, and since Eid al-Fitr also denotes the first day of Shawwal month, it is celebrated on separate days across the globe.

Muslims over the world celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr by practising their part in the prayers which are followed by a sermon early after sunrise. The day continues with believers wearing new clothes, gives greetings to each other by saying “Eid Mubarak”, which means “have a blessed Eid”, and also sharing sweets. Children receive lots of gifts and money from elders who are called "Eidi".

The day of Eid-ul-Fitr is incomplete without a widespread delicious food menu containing types of dishes including Biryani, Lachcha or Seviyaan, Haleem, Nihari, kebabs and a dessert-like Seviyaan, sheer khurma, toasted sweet vermicelli noodles with milk and dried fruit. As one of the five mainstays of Islam, Zakat or giving alms to the poor and mainly to fakeer, charity on behalf of every member of the family to the poor is also practised on Eid.

History

It is believed that Eid-ul-Fitr originated by Prophet Mohammad. Many traditions indicate that this festival was first observed when Prophet moved to Mecca. A trusted and well-known friend of Prophet has narrated that when he visited in Mecca, Prophet saw people celebrating two particular dates during which they would gratify in happiness and happiness. It was then that the Prophet remarked that the Almighty has decided two days of celebration and festivity- Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.

Eid al-Fitr marked the end of fasting from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan and the beginning of the Shawwal month. Eid-ul-Fitr is also celebrated to pay honour to Allah for granting strength and courage during the month-long fasting ceremonies.
