International justice day 2020 observation, History, significance

World Day for International Justice, also referred to as Day of International Criminal Justice or International Justice Day is celebrated annually on 17th of July to raise awareness amongst the people about the justice of a single person entire world. The aims of international justice day to defend the world against international crimes.

World Day for International Justice is celebrated to raise awareness to the people informed and united to support justice. The main objective is to support the rights of the victims. international day of justice is observed to attract people over the world to pay attention to serious issues. The observation of the Day also protects people from several crimes and warn those people who affect peace and security around the world.

According to Coalition for the ICC, the International Justice Day is celebrated every year, the very important anniversary of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). On this day or international social justice, civil society organisations came together to share their views on the need for international justice, the current state of the Court, its achievements, challenges and how we can fulfil the promises of Rome and sustain justice in the world.

What is the International Criminal Court (ICC)?

It is the first permanent and independent international judicial institution that is capable of trying individuals accused of the most serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights which include the crime of genocide, the war of crimes and crimes against humanity. International Criminal Court (ICC) came into being when several states adopted a statute in Rome. This statue is known as the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Let me tell you that the ICC does not replace the national courts but it is available when a country can't or won't carry out investigations and prosecute perpetrators. ICC seriously focused on characteristics of justice worldwide.

World Day for International Justice aims to strengthen international criminal justice across the world. The International justice day also appreciates the 150 countries that have signed the Court’s treaty. Nearly 123 States, representative of every region of the world, have ratified the treaty. ICC has urged all the member states to immediately initiate the process of ratifying the Agreement on Privileges and Protection.

According to Coalition ICC, The Kirsten Meersschaert, Director of Programs, Coalition for the ICC talked about the importance of accountability and our role in ensuring international justice. "Accountability is an important component of preventing violent conflict and is the only way to provide true redress to victims. States, the ICC, civil society, and people the world over must each do their part to ensure that the international justice system created by the Rome Statute 21 years ago lives up to its promise and ends the far too long-lasting history of impunity."

The awareness is very important for a person about their rights, many people may not know about this day and the social importance of this day for social justice day. So, There are a number of different ways you can play a part. First of all, share the good information in society wherever you live, you can write an article or a blog or short essay to highlight the need for justice where you live? and you can give social justice speech like speech about social justice. You could send a communication to your local elected representative and voice your opinion. Speak to members of your government. Or take part in one of the many events that will be held in cities around the world.

Media and social media can play a huge role to aware the society. But some time media shows only spicy news who directly favoured their news channel. While Various events around the world are organised to promote International Justice day and also to support the International Criminal court (ICC). The world day of social justice is also promoted by most of the news channels, newspapers and radio. Several organisational groups make people pay attention to some particular issues like violence against women, genocide etc.

International Justice Day commemorates the historic adoption of the Rome Statute on 17 July 1998 and marks the importance of continuing the fight against impunity and bringing justice for the victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and especially violence against women and children.

the international justice day is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute in 1998. With the help of this treaty, the International Criminal Court (ICC) was established. On 1 June 2010, the Review Conference of the Rome Statute which was held in Kampala (Uganda) and the Assembly of the State Parties decided to celebrate 17 July as the International Criminal Justice Day on 17 July. In 1998 since that day, 139 countries have signed the Court's treaty and nearly 80 States, representative of every region of the world, have ratified it. ( from Jagran Josh)

in the past year, On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Rome Statute, No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) founder Emma Bonino called for a new compact, noting that “The Court needs to do better. It needs to review its past performance, ask itself some hard questions and make some hard choices so it can work more effectively and efficiently. If it does that, it will have the moral high ground when it asks for what it needs and we will be in a better position to support and promote it.” (from Coalition for the ICC)

History of ICC

ICC was established upon the adoption of the Rome Statute on 17 July 1998. It came into effect on 1 July 2002. It is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands. ICC is a global civil society network with over 2,500 member organizations in 150 countries. the aim of ICC to fight against crime over the world.
