What was the 'Y2K' crisis and why did PM Modi mention it?

At the beginning of electronic computing, 2 digits were used instead of 4 on the digit of the year to show dates in computer systems over the world. In Y2K, Y means year and 2K means 2000.

In the era of computing, when the year 1999 was about to end in 2000, computers around the world were not ready to go ahead on 31 December 1999. it is the sign of Y2K crisis.

According to this, the last two digits of the year could be changed, but the change in the initial digits was not possible. That is, after 1999, computers were showing dates for the year 1900 (01-01-00). 100 years behind meantime. that's why Y2K crisis rose.

Y2K crisis came 20 years ago

Today, even though there has been a communication revolution all over the world. The huge computer has changed its form and pocketed it, but at the beginning of this century, the situation was not like this. It was also said that computers from all over the world will be destroyed. The communication system will be affected due to the Y2K bug.

This was the period when the whole world was entering the 21st century from the 20th century. The year 1999 was to end in early 2000, but the computer systems around the world were not able to change the year from December 31, 1999, onwards. This problem only lasted until Indian IT  engineers make such computers for the 21st century.

Y2K crisis: The date doesn't change after 1999

In fact, when the year 1999 ended, at that time the computer was supposed to do the next year by 1900 and if it were to happen then all the calculations around the world would be wrong. At the beginning of the the year 2000, the problem in the computer calendar and storage over numbers was called the Y2K crisis.

The whole world was worried that computers would stop working as soon as they enter the year 2000. The Y2K crisis was also called the million bug because the date bug was about to appear in computers around the globe. Governments around the world spent billions of dollars to deal with this problem. If this bug had not been fixed, the biggest damage would have been to the cyber security, banking and scientific fields.

Why did PM Modi mention the Y2K crisis?

Like today, the entire world was troubled by this crisis at that time. Like the coronavirus epidemic, there was no threat to life, but there was an earthquake in the technology world. Computer experts of that era raised their hands, saying that computers do not have suitable programs for the 21st century, so they can collapse. 

The situation in America-Europe was very odd. Demolition of the computer means power grid failure. like,  Business collapses due to lack of sales and production. Bank services disrupted. That is, the economy collapses.

India solved the Y2K crisis

By that time IT companies like Infosys, Wipro had started in India. Aside from this, there was nowhere in the world cheap labour and a sharp mind people like India. It is estimated that around 600 to 1,600 billion US dollars had to be spent worldwide to fix the bug. Then Indian scientists came with their extraordinary skills to end this crisis and had proved their strength around the world. 

It was only after this that India made a stamp in the IT sector, after which the demand of Indian Computer Engineers in the abroad increased rapidly.
