International Day of the Girl Child 2020: Theme, Motive of Celebration

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

International Day of the Girl Child 2020: Theme, Motive of Celebration

International Day of the Girl Child 2020: the Day also called World Girl Child Day, every year celebrated on the 11 October. On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 (link is external)declaring October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. Gender equality is a global priority for UNESCO, and the support of young girls, their training and their full ability to make their voices and ideas heard are drivers for sustainable development and peace. In too many cases across the globe, teenage girls drop out of school, due to forced marriages or child labour. UNESCO is committed to celebrating this day to ensure that all girls have access to quality education and dignified life.

Theme

"My Voice, Our Equal Future"

Progress for adolescent girls has not kept pace with the realities they face today, and COVID-19 has reinforced many of these gaps. This year, under the theme, “My Voice, Our Equal Future”, let’s seize the opportunity to be inspired by what adolescent girls see as the change they want, the solutions- big and small- they are leading and demanding across the globe.

“Because I was brave enough to convince my parents to let me go to school instead of getting married, I’m able to do what I love the most – study.” -Janaki Sah, 14, from Nepal

This time International Day of the Girl Child Day Indicates directly in some important wellbeing points-

  • Live free from gender-based violence, harmful practices, and HIV and AIDS
  • Learn new skills towards the futures they choose
  • Lead as a generation of activists accelerating social change

Motive of Celebration & Observation

A Message From the Directer-General, "The figures speak for themselves and unfortunately, they are worrying: 132 million girls are still out of school and 9 million of them – compared to 3 million boys – will never even enter a classroom. In the poorest countries, only 13% of girls who manage to enrol in secondary school complete their education. Inequalities between gender and States, two mutually reinforcing inequalities, persist. If we are not careful, these inequalities will worsen tomorrow, particularly as a result of the digital revolution that we cannot allow to leave girls out in the cold."  —  Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child

Young girls have the right to a safe, educated, and good life, not only during these critical formative years but also as they grow into women. If effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as of tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders. An investment in realising the power of adolescent girls upholds their rights today and promises a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in solving the problems of climate change, political conflict, economic growth, disease prevention, and global sustainability.

History

According to UNICEF, Twenty-five years ago in 1995, some 30,000 women and men from nearly 200 countries arrived in Beijing, China, for the Fourth World Conference on Women, determined to recognize women's rights as human rights. The conference culminated in the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: the most comprehensive policy agenda for gender equality.

According to the United Nation, The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by world leaders in 2015, embody a roadmap for progress that is sustainable and leaves no one behind.

Accomplishing gender equality uniformity and women' strengthening is fundamental to every one of the 17 goals. Just by guaranteeing the privileges of ladies and young ladies over all the objectives will we get to justice and consideration, economies that work for all, and continuing our mutual environment now and for people in the future.
